Course Description

Healthcare professionals have a growing ethical and clinical mandate to provide palliative care to more patients and earlier in the illness trajectory. Yet, many clinicians are not knowledgeable about what palliative care services are available, when to offer them and how to communicate effectively with patients who are seriously ill. In addition, recent legal changes have made many healthcare professionals uncertain about their role in providing care options to patients with burdensome health-related symptoms. This conference focuses on ethical issues in palliative care practice and skills for addressing ethical challenges in this increasingly important and challenging area of healthcare practice. Teaching methods include lecture, discussion and case study analysis.
